Phillip Heggarty beat his friend Derek Bennett to death with a hammer and then rolled him up in a rug and put him in a car that he set fire to in a cardiff car park.
They had spent the day drinking and taking drugs with the attack taking place after Derek Bennett had settled down on the sofa presumably to sleep.
The motive was said to be robbery with Phillip Heggarty taking several thousand pounds worth of drugs and the next day paying £1.5k in debts. The trial heard that Derek Bennett was known to have had about £3k on him and £10k in drugs all of which was missing.
When questioned Phillip Heggarty said it was ridiculous to think that he would kill his best friend.
Phillip Heggartys fingerprints were found in Derek Bennetts blood in the cellar, and a large cache of drugs found at Phillip Heggartys girlfriends.
He was initially sentenced to a minimum of 30 years but the sentence was later increased to a whole life tariff.
